Cottington Lakes fishery is pleased and excited to announce a new feature on our website – “Barry’s Blog”. Guest writers Barry, and son Ben O’Connor, have made their angling home at Cottington and know the lakes very well. They will be providing regular features based on their experiences here and hopefully
further afield, providing some hints and tips for anglers visiting the lakes, letting us know about new equipment that’s coming onto the market and, where possible, their experience of it, with the overall intention of promoting the sport.
Barry and Ben will be familiar names to many having fished for many years at venues across the country, including very successful and ongoing participation in carp fishing matches both domestically and abroad, but for those who don’t know them, here’s an introduction:
“Ben and I have been carp fishing together for many years now although I was fishing long before Ben was born. We’ve fished on venues up and down the country and have caught plenty of carp along the way including some real lumps. Ben’s PB in England is a 45lbs 12oz Mirror which was caught on Lake Pepper at Cottington and mine is a 42lbs 8oz Mirror.

The last seventeen years or so have seen us heavily involved in carp fishing matches, having won many of them and being placed in several others. We’ve participated in the British Carp Angling Championships coming second and third before eventually winning it in 2012. We took part in two trials for the England Carp Team and won both of them catching a world record weight of 1776lbs 2oz in the first one. We are currently ranked number one in England.

Our carp fishing has taken us abroad to France, Belgium, Spain and South Africa. Ben’s PB abroad is a Mirror of 50lbs 2oz and mine is a Common of 60lbs 8oz.
It was about five or six years ago that we started carp fishing at Cottington. That was in a carp match which we went on to win. That first visit made a huge impression on us and we have been fishing there ever since. Some of the most stunning carp we have ever caught have come from Cottington including many thirties and several forties. Indeed the Elite Carp Masters, which we organise, has now become a permanent fixture on the Cottington calendar.
We’ve written articles for several carp magazines and have also appeared on TV in match related filming and interviews.”
We hope that Barry and Ben’s support and assistance will help Cottington Lakes continue to go from strength to strength.
